Silent Music
In 1952, composer John Cage presented his "silent" piece, 4'33", now regarded as his most famous, controversial and perhaps most important work.
Rather than being an artistic joke or the "end of music," 4'33'' marked the beginning of a serious involvement with the phenomenology of sound and its placement in time and with silence as an autonomous musical phenomena.
The Folds Ensemble, directed by composer-guitarist Jason Brogan and for this concert, featuring keyboardist Sam Sfirri and percussionist Ron Wiltrout, will present a concert exploring the enduring impact of 4'33", focusing on contemporary works while including those from the experimental music tradition.
The Folds Ensemble focuses on the performance of experimental music and performance art and has performed at both Listen/Space and as part of the Experimental Music Series at the Ontological-Hysteric Theater in New York.
