The Flood Gallery Fine Art Center is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to promoting the arts in Asheville through the exhibition of established and emerging artists from all over the world. Through artist-residency programs, public events and workshops, and educational activities, Flood Gallery seeks to make art a vital and important part of life in Asheville.

THE INDIAN SLIDE GUITAR, HANSA VEENA
Performs Live At Flood Gallery Fine Art Center

ASHEVILLE, NC -(October 2008)- The Flood Gallery Fine Art Center ("Flood Gallery") celebrates Indian culture on October 25 th in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Asheville's "Passport to India." Female performing Artiste, Kuntala Ray, is one of India's few female guitarists to have the proficiency and knowledge in playing the Hansa Veena, a musical instrument that blends the tonalities of Vichitra Veena, Sitar and Sarod. Kuntala Ray will not only perform live at the University of North Carolina at Asheville on October 24 th , but in the Flood Gallery Fine Art Center (located on the second floor of the Phil Mechanic Studios building) on October 25 th from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Admission is $5 (suggested donation) with light refreshments available. "When Dr. Maitra, UNCA Professor of Philosophy, mentioned Kuntala Ray's visit to Western North Carolina this fall, we knew the Flood Gallery Fine Art Center couldn't pass up an opportunity to work with her again," says Executive Director, Jolene Mechanic. "Kuntala Ray is regarded as 'the torchbearer' of Hansa Veena, and we are honored as a pluralistic arts organization to host another one of her performances in our gallery."
Kuntala Ray is a science graduate from Calcutta University. She began her career as an apprentice under renowned guitarist of Bengal, Sri Uttam Chakrabarty. As Ray's passion for the guitar grew rapidly, she became recognized within the Indian classical music community for her ability to render light music and control the Hawaiian Slide Guitar. Ray is now a faculty member of the Sri Aurobindo Education Society of Delhi, which organizes musical workshops with the help of the Human Resources Department of the Indian Government. Her performances include, but are not limited to, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Darbur Music Circle, Sngeet Priya Samsad, the Hindu Cultural Center of Tennessee, University of North Carolina, The Flood Gallery, and the Salt Lake Cultural Association.
